Industrial Engineering Curriculum Information

Below are links for the curriculum sheets and the flow charts for IE majors for the 07-09 catalog, the 05-07 catalog, and the 09-11 catalog.

For those preferring to remain on the 07-09 catalog after Fall 2009, IME 417 will be automatically substituted for IME 407. In addition, students may substitute any IME manufacturing related course for IME 335/356. The only exception in that IME 241 cannot be taken by IE majors. Courses allowable are: IME 335, IME 356, IME 458, IME 418, IME 416.

Technical Electives Guidelines

A technical elective course is any course that is not required as part of your curriculum.  Please follow the guidelines as specified below.  If you have any questions, please contact your academic advisor or come to the IME department office 192-223.

  • Technical elective courses must be upper-division (300-400) level engineering.  Except a maximum of 4 units of lower division coursework with the approval of department chair.  IME 320 cannot be used for technical elective credit because the course is offered for none engineering majors only. In addition, IME 342 cannot be used as a technical elective for IE students.
  • A maximum of 4 units of technical electives may be taken outside of the College of Engineering.
  • Technical electives may not be used to satisfy other major, support, or GE course requirements.
  • Technical electives must meet EAC-ABET requirements.
  • Select courses from the guidelines or with advisor's guidance, courses may be selevted from an area of emphasis.
  • In some cases, IME 400 (Special Problems) may be used for technical elective credit (limit is four units and the Special Problems form must be attached to the technical elective form).
  • Must be approved by your IME faculty advisor or the IME department chair and the Engineering Advising Center.
  • Once approved this form cannot be altered.  If any changes are made to your technical elective list you must submist a new form.

Suggested Technical Elective Course:

Students must take between 12 and 16 technical electives units (depending on the catalog they are under). These courses are meant to be technical in nature and of interest to the student. All but one course (4 units) must be upper level engineering courses.

Industrial Engineering Majors - Possible Courses

IME 313, 335/356*, 336, 401, 408, 409, 411, 413, 416, 418, 427, 428, 431, 435, 437, 442, 455, 457, 458

*IME 335 or 356 can be used for technical elective credit if both are taken, since one must be used to satisfy the Major Course Requirement.

Manufacturing Engineering Majors - Possible Courses

Manufacturing students also have the option of designing, with the advisor's guidance, their own sequence of technical elective courses compatible with career objectives.  Shown below are three possible "emphasis areas" with suggested courses listed in each area that students may select from.

Multi-Disciplinary Teamwork Certification

As part of the requirements for graduation, both IE and MFGE majors must participate in a teamwork experience where they join students from multiple disciplines. For IE Majors this requirement is fulfilled by participation in the team project in IME 319, Human Factors Engineering. For MFGE students this is fulfilled by participation in IME 418, Product Process Design. In addition, all IE and MFGE students will participate with students from other majors when they enroll in IME 144, Introduction to Design and Manufacturing.
