IME/IAB CBF Challenge

The IME/IAB CBF Challenge is a request from our Industrial Advisory Board President Dave Hampton,  to our alumni in the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Programs urging continued support for the students in the IME Department during this unprecedented budget crisis.  Please read the following letter and consider making a donation to the IME CBF Challenge.

My Fellow Industrial and Manufacturing Alumni:

I am a 1986 graduate of the IME department and chair of the Industrial Advisory Board.  On behalf of the Board, I write to you to asking for your help in a crisis facing our department – the loss of funds to support student projects and student club activities.

Since the early 1990s, College-Based Fees (CBF) paid by our students have enabled the department to hire lecturers and to fund a variety of student projects and activities.  The clubs and projects are an essential part of the Cal Poly learn-by-doing experience.  It’s a reason I’ve been successful in industry, and also a reason why industry continues to demand and hire Cal Poly graduates.  Due to budget cuts within the entire CSU system, the IME department faces a dilemma:  the Provost and our college’s dean need to use all of the CBF to retain lecturers – which means that student project funds will be sacrificed.

During the November Industrial Advisory Board meeting, the IME students stated their support for the lecturers, but they also stressed how their classes and projects will be diminished if we can’t replace the student project funds.  The students identified a small number of projects and labs that they believe are absolutely essential, and which normally would have been covered by the College-Based Fee.  These include student industrial trips, printing supplies for a student run & funded computer lab, senior and student class projects, and replacement tools for manufacturing labs.

The critical list for student projects and club activities totals $25,000.  We the members of the Industry Advisory Board are supporting this effort, and I am asking you to join with us.  In addition, the IME faculty have issued a challenge:  if IME alumni contribute at least $20,000, the faculty will donate an additional $5,000.  Any funds raised in excess of $25,000 will be placed in a department account for similar needs (i.e. student workers, equipment, etc).  To provide additional information, the IME department has established a special website: http://ime.calpoly.edu/giving/.  I urge you to check out this site.

These are difficult times and it is easy to get caught up in trying to figure out how we got here.  Whatever the answer is, our short-term issue is crystal clear:  the students need our help, and we alums need to step forward.  We must help ensure that today’s students are provided all of the wonderful opportunities that were provided to us.  Your gift will make a difference.

Sincerely,

David Hampton (IME ’86)

Chair, Industry Advisory Board
