Welcome to the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IME) Department at Cal Poly, located in San Luis Obispo, California, a small city known for its extraordinary quality of life and a temperate, Mediterranean climate that is comfortable year-round.

At IME, we educate, inspire, and support students to attain successful careers through our signature “Learn By Doing” philosophy.

The IME department offers two undergraduate degrees – B.S. in Industrial Engineering and B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering, and two graduate degrees – M.S. in Industrial Engineering and M.S. in Engineering Management. Industrial engineering curriculum emphasizes operations research, data analytics, supply chain management, production planning, quality control, and human factors & ergonomics. Manufacturing engineering focuses on advanced manufacturing technologies such as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining, additive manufacturing, robotics, and automation. Our dedicated faculty and staff are deeply committed to student success. They bring real-world experience into the classroom, combining innovative teaching, industry collaboration, and applied research that addresses today’s engineering challenges. Our exceptional students learn in small, collaborative classes and gain practical experience through internships, research, and study-abroad opportunities. Over 80% of our students complete at least one internship before graduation. Our vibrant student clubs build community while fostering teamwork, communication, and leadership. Finally, our accomplished alumni and industry advisory board (hyper-link to IAB page) are a vital part of the IME community. They regularly return to campus to mentor students, share latest technologies, and recruit for internships, co-ops, and full-time positions.
